Each week, we’re featuring reviews of moms part of The Old Schoolhouse magazine’s review crew who are using the Reading Kingdom with their children. The crew was offered a free year subscription of the Reading Kingdom program to help us spread the word about the program. Click the their names to visit their blogs, and be sure to follow our Reading Kingdom Twitter list featuring some of our homeschooling parents.
“I love how this program is really filling in the blanks for my son. I’ve spent the last couple years teaching him phonics, and reading skills but like I mentioned he was just not ready to read. Using this has really helped him in becoming an independent reader. We are currently working through Level 1 and still have a lot to work on but we fell in love with it so far. My son works five days a week on it and does two lessons a day. He is 9 so he can handle this amount of work since he has had reading instruction in the past…
…This program is designed for a year-long reading curriculum. So far using this curriculum, my son has really helped my son in learning how to read. He seems to spell better and read words in books with more confidence. We will definitely be using this until the end.”Lynn Pitts
“We LOVE this program. I have officially packed up my phonics curriculum for both children. I have noticed improvement in reading with my 7 year old and much less frustration from both of us since we don’t have to dredge through phonics. She can read real books and spell the words and get feedback right away. We will continue till the program is finished and I will know for certain her reading level….I plan on using Reading Kingdom with my other children as they reach the appropiate age to use it.” Katie Corbett
“Reading Kingdom really has opened the world of reading to [my seven year old] like nothing else has been able to and given him the tools and confidence he needed to start succeeding. I am very impressed with the program and his progress and will continue to use it.” Lisa Trombley
“What B (age seven, officially in first grade) thinks: “I think Reading Kingdom is very fun. The first part of the lesson, in the section that I am doing, I can do one of three things; read a book, type a new word or write in a book. And the books are short, so on those days I do two lessons. There is also a section that has two parts learning new words in a notebook or typing new words with no help. The second part of the lesson is a part where you click on a word that has missing letters then you type in those missing letters. I think Reading Kingdom is great for kids my age, because you learn new words and how to spell them….
What C (age five, working on kindergarten) thinks: “It is fun. I like doing it every single day. I like reading the stories. I like the part where I have to find specific words in order. And the space part where I clicked on the words that I was supposed to type. I liked everything and it is good for kids my age…
What Dad Thought: “As I observed B & C doing their Reading Kingdom lessons I was impressed with the content and the timing. It’s kept simple by focusing on one subject for the entire lesson. The amount of time given is enough for B & C to complete each task without being rushed or bored by waiting for the lesson to move on. Each lesson is about 5 – 10 minutes long and that works really well for the kids. Reading Kingdom is a great program.” Rani Grant
“Being a visual person, I like the colorful graphics. I also like the fact that it is teaching multiple skills that every child needs to be successful at reading. I like the hands-on that the computer gives to the program…My son is a visual-kinesthetic learner so this is perfect for him. As is also good for audio-visual learners, like my daughter.”
